The ‘LEN’ function in Excel will return the length (i.e. number of characters) of a given text/numerical string.

Whilst the ‘LEN’ function will also count numbers, numerical formatting characters are not included. The easiest way to comprehend this point is that only characters typed into the formula bar will count. For instance, if you type ‘10000’ but then format the number to show ‘10,000’, then only five characters will be counted.

**Syntax **

=LEN(text)

**Arguments **

*Text* – The text you wish to calculate the length of.

**Function category**

**Returns**

The LEN function will return a number, representing the length of a particular text string.
